MAHESHWARI SAKHI

Maheshwari Sakhi ("Sakhi")

Sakhi was launched in June 2005 on the auspicious occasion of Mahesh Navmi. This effort is the first of its kind in North America -- the women's wing of MMNA.

Membership

Sakhi is open to all women members of MMNA that wish to join.

Vision

From JIVA (individual self) to SHIVA (universal self)

Goal

To unify Maheshwari Women in North America as one PARIWAR!

Objectives

  1. To empower ourselves, to build our communication, teamwork, leadership, and entrepreneurial skills, and to recognize leadership, achievement and entrepreneurship among us.

  2. To integrate all women in the Maheshwari community and to create an informal support system - including for those in distress and abuse situations or facing family crises.

  3. To close in on the intergenerational gap, by having older generations and younger generations of Sakhis work together and address each others needs. To this end, we will launch a "mentoring program" to encourage intergenerational networking along lines of professional or other interests.

  4. To close in on the cross-cultural gap between Maheshwari women brought up in India and those brought up in the U.S., by forging friendships and working together to address each others needs. To this end, we will launch a "buddy program" connecting Maheshwari women brought up in India and those brought up in the U.S.

  5. To foster Maheshwari culture and Marwadi language, spiritual awareness, family values, and to provide a sense of identity and community through celebration of Maheshwari festivals such as Gangaur and Teej, etc.

  6. To provide opportunities for sharing talent and knowledge in fun and creative ways - crafts, arts, cooking, picnics, retreats, etc.

  7. To provide a forum for mutual sharing of personal life experiences and knowledge, how difficult situations have been overcome, how goals and accomplishments have been achieved.

  8. To focus generally on what needs to be improved in our community, including the needs of the senior generations, stay-at-home moms, working moms, new arrivals to the U.S.
